Zao Make-Up is committed to offering makeup products with impeccable formulas made from as many natural-origin ingredients as possible. Free from petrochemical derivatives and synthetic preservatives, Zao products are healthy for your skin. Our raw materials are obtained through simple and non-polluting transformations of plants or minerals such as plant extracts (bamboo, shea butter, apricot, corn, etc.), vegetable oils and butters, waxes, and mineral pigments — without added preservatives or synthetic fragrances. For responsible makeup, ingredients from ecological or organic farming are prioritized, respecting both skin and the environment. The colors in the range are exclusively created using natural pigments. Active ingredients are selected according to their specific properties in order to perfectly combine makeup performance (color payoff, wear, finish, textures, etc.) with skincare benefits.
Most of our products are certified organic or eco-certified by Ecocert (according to Ecocert Greenlife and Cosmos Standard guidelines) and labeled Cosmebio*. From the very beginning of the ZAO adventure, we chose to prioritize raw materials sourced from organic farming. By selecting ingredients free from chemical fertilizers and pesticides, we minimize soil and groundwater pollution, better protect biodiversity, and care for your health. Our makeup products also offer enhanced biocompatibility with the skin. Indeed, the active ingredients contained in organic plants are much more concentrated than those found in conventionally grown plants. *Except for our Nail Polishes, which are bio-sourced, and the “Audacieux” range.
The quality of our raw materials is essential. That is why we are constantly searching for new natural ingredients to guarantee you the very best. Although we are an organic and cruelty-free makeup brand, quality and innovation remain at the heart of our concerns. Convinced that organic makeup can compete with conventional makeup, we are committed to offering increasingly high-performing products. Innovation is central to all developments. We endlessly explore new raw materials and experiment with new ingredient combinations to achieve superior makeup quality.
Out of respect for all living beings, none of our finished products or raw materials are tested on animals. We exclude the use of animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax and cochineal (red pigment). All Zao products are therefore certified Vegan and Cruelty Free by PETA. In addition, our brushes are made with synthetic bristles rather than animal hair.
Driven by deeply human values, Zao entrusts the packaging of its products to Fabrik Etik, an adapted company founded in 2016 at the initiative of David Reccole and friends close to the brand. Located near Cosm’Etika, this organization provides a suitable working environment for people with disabilities and promotes the development of their skills for long-term professional integration. Fabrik Etik now handles all Zao product packaging as well as the digital printing of labels. Since June 2018, the company has been Cosmos-certified for organic cosmetics packaging, illustrating the brand’s commitment to quality and ethical values. In the same spirit of social commitment, Zao also works to support the well-being and dignity of everyone. The brand notably supports associations involved in the fight against cancer by offering healthy and respectful products to help patients reconnect with their body image through socio-aesthetic care. These treatments help restore self-confidence, strengthen personal assurance, and allow individuals to see themselves beyond the prism of illness.
